Chest workout

22 04 2009

Normal routine. Didn’t feel particularly strong. Starting to get concerned about muscle memory and a need for change. It’s almost warm enough here to swim outside. I would like to bike, swim and lift each twice a week.

Abs and arms

19 04 2009

I really like going to the gym for the last few hours that its open. The only people there are those folks who are working hard to make time for exercise. I have gone in the morning and most of the people are doing more talking than anything else.

I went super sets with arms and abs, alternating. For arms I did the usual routine of preacher, standing dumbbell, hammer and concentration curls. For the triceps, i went straight bar presses, overhead rope pulls, single hand presses and single hand cable pulls.

For abs, I did 150 of various crunches and then did leaning extensions.

Stairway to Hades

18 04 2009

I did 20 minutes on the Stairmaster after a back workout today. This machine is very difficult for me for some reason. It takes a lot of effort. Got it done.

Changing it up a bit

18 04 2009

I just read an article about routine lifting and muscle memory. So my back workout routine was modified today. I switched between heavy sets and lighter higher reps so that it was like this: 10 heavy, 8light, 10 heavy, and 8 light. Performed seated row, overhead pull downs, rear incline, seated military and dead lift. I left off dumbbell work, shoulder squeeze and dumbbell extensions.

I could really feel the difference. Very tired

15 stinkin’ minutes

14 04 2009

After a hard bicep/tricep workout, I wanted to try another 20 minutes on the stair climber. Bad storms today and 35-40 mph winds kept me from cycling. I just wasn’t into it. All I could stand was 15 stinkin’ minutes . . .

Oh well . . .

I can hardly lift my arms

14 04 2009

Overdid the bicep and tricep workout tonight. It was a great night as my daughter, Madi and age 12, went to the gym with me tonight. She is full of energy and I love hanging out with her.

Anyways, I went up 5 lbs. on all dumbbell bicep routines. Preacher curls were 3 x 8 at 100 lbs. Felt really strong. I can notice more definition and strength. As I write this entry, though, I am paying the price. I am going to bed and hoping the sleep will heal my body. I have a busy day tomorrow, but I want to cycle 20-25 miles tomorrow evening.

Benching about it

14 04 2009

Chest workout today with interspersed sets of heavy with low reps and lighter weights with high reps. Flat bench, incline bench, pulley flies, raised pulley flies and flat bench dumbbell flies. Most the exercises were 4 x 8 or 3 x 10 in reps. It really helps to fatigue the muscle group for definition. I want to lose or replace with muscle another 20 lbs. I have until November of this year to meet that goal. I gave myself two years to get back in shape and I am close. I am stronger physically and aerobicly. My bench max is at 270. I can dead lift 305. I can bike ride 100 miles in about 8 hours. I am 42 years old.

I just have the last remains of the central abdominal fat to banish. I will get there. I will succeed.

“Staired”

13 04 2009

I am becoming more and more convinced that exercise is not a choice to follow one routine, but a lifestyle choice. The pursuit of varying activities to release the stress in your life and to engage your body. Variety is going to be key for me as it seems I am able to achieve muscle memory for a type of exercise within 4-6 weeks of beginning a new program.

I have been looking for a new form of exercise for a month or so now. The pool is still too cold for me. The stair climber is my new torture device of choice. In 25 minutes I have a good sweat and it challenges me. I will switch to the pool in May . . . probably.

Half-hearted back

3 04 2009

Went to the gym on Friday night feeling half-hearted and a little down, Started out with seated lat pull downs, seated row and standing straight bar pull down. Bent over single dumbbell rows 3 x 8 at 50lbs. Should have done more, but I just wasn’t feeling it.
